The SCORE project’s legacy towards the climate resilience of European coastal cities

SCORE (Smart Control of the Climate Resilience in European Coastal Cities) was an EU project funded by the Horizon 2020 programme from July 2021 to June 2025. Through an innovative Coastal City Living Labs (CCLL) framework, and the use of smart technologies and nature-based solutions, SCORE aimed to increase the climate resilience of European coastal cities.

The SCORE project’s achievements

Throughout its 4 years’ duration, SCORE achieved significant results which received recognition by the EU Mission Adaptation to Climate Change and by the European Commission, which in the final review report acknowledged the significant impact of SCORE on the coastal cities involved in the project. It highlighted the high potential of its solutions and methodologies for the adaptation of coastal cities, as well as other coastal environments, to climate-related risks.

One of the main achievements of the project was the establishment of a network of 10 Coastal City Living Labs across 7 countries.

Map of SCORE’s Coastal City Living Labs

These Coastal City Living Labs functioned as collaborative hubs bringing together local communities, researchers, policymakers, and businesses to jointly design and implement climate resilience solutions adapted to their unique geographic and socio-economic conditions. Each Living Lab, following a novel framework developed within the project, applied a structured methodology to guide its setup, stakeholder engagement, and co-creation activities. The empowerment of communities is the true legacy of the project, as they will continue co-creating solutions, enhancing the resilience of their coastal areas even as SCORE concluded.

Key project outputs

Among the other key outputs developed by SCORE, we can highlight:

All the tools supporting the climate adaptation of coastal cities can be found on the SCORE website.

Euronovia maximised the visibility of the project results

We were the lead partner (Work Package leader) responsible for communication and dissemination of the project’s activities and results. Working closely with all partners and Coastal City Living Labs, we ensured that ongoing work was effectively captured and shared, maximising the visibility of the project’s outputs. The project reached a high level of visibility and outreach, with activities such as:

  • Development of several communication supports (flyer, brochure, press release, roll-up, infographics, etc.)
  • Participation in 120 external events, including 52 scientific conferences
  • Publication of 56 journal articles, 6 conference abstracts and 28 conference papers, 2 editorial and 1 book chapter, and 1 special issue (all available on Zenodo)
  • Organisation of 3 climate adaptation training schools in all 10 Coastal City Living Labs
  • Organisation of 2 international workshops, one at the Open Living Lab Days and the other at European Week of Regions and Cities.
  • Organisation of the project’s Final event at the European Climate Change Adaptation Conference (ECCA) in Rimini, Italy in June 2025

Effectively communicating and disseminating this project’s work was both a challenge and a tremendous opportunity. Collaborating with highly engaged partners on such an important issue allowed us to share complex climate adaptation solutions widely, amplify the impact of our results, and create a lasting legacy of knowledge, visibility, and stakeholder engagement across Europe.
